Newsmound – The best of what you may have missed

Welcome to the Newsmound – a regular look at the obscure entertainment news stories you might have missed. Today: Simon CowellOne Direction and Ryan Gosling.

    • Simon Cowell has finally conceded defeat to BBC One’s The Voice UK. Last night’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent scored a hefty 9.43m viewers for ITV1, but The Voice UK won out with an average of 9.54m. Cowell tweeted: ‘A slightly irritated congrats to Danny [Cohen, BBC exec] and the BBC. But you didn’t have a dancing dog!’ Right.
    • Ryan Gosling courted more comparisons to superheroes this week after saving journalist Laurie Penny from getting run over by a taxi in New York City. It’s not the first time Gosling has had to come to the rescue; last year footage surfaced of him splitting up a street fight. More from Political Scrapbook.
    • Last night, One Direction delivered a dull but admirable performance of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ on US chat show Saturday Night Live. They sound pretty good but it’s nothing to write home about; and Niall looks a bit lost, bless him. Watch it here.
    • Cheryl Cole has reportedly decided to drop her surname when she launches her comeback later this year. This is a bad move, I think; ‘Cheryl’ is not a great name for a popstar. Grandmothers and middle-aged Loose Women presenters, not popstars, are called Cheryl. More from the Daily Mail.
    • Damon Albarn has signaled that Blur’s Olympics performance in Hyde Park this summer will be their last. Let’s hope so.
